Palabras de Esperanza, in partnership with The Hope Alliance (Utah) and the local Rotary Club, invites dedicated optometrists to participate in a vital eye care mission in Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), Sonora, Mexico.
Our goal is to bring essential vision services to underserved communities, aiming to examine and provide glasses to approximately 170 patients per day. These clinics will serve a mix of students and adults, addressing a critical need for accessible eye care and empowering individuals through improved vision.
Key Mission Details:
· Location: Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico (commonly known as Rocky Point). Approximately a four-hour drive from Phoenix, Arizona.
· Transportation: Volunteers are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from Puerto Peñasco.
o Note for Drivers: Mexican auto insurance is required for driving in Mexico. Guidance on border crossing procedures will be provided upon acceptance.
· Accommodations: All accommodations will be provided for the duration of the mission (Wednesday arrival to Sunday departure).
· Equipment: Necessary optometric equipment will be provided for the clinics, including phoropters and slit lamps. Please bring lenses and an indirect if you can.
· Support: Translators will be on-site to facilitate communication with patients. Pre-screening and dispensing support will also be available.
· Patient Scope: We anticipate primarily addressing refractive errors and dispensing eyeglasses.
· Cost to Participate: A small mission fee of $25 is requested to cover local expenses.
